BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERTROPHY (BPH)

BPH is the result of gradual enlargement of the prostate. The symptoms include the need to pass urine frequently during the night, with frequency increasing as time goes on. Other symptoms can include pain and burning upon urination, and difficulty in starting and stopping urination as well.

Description
Enlarged Prostate is a condition involving the enlargement (hyperplasia) and Inflammation of the (male) Prostate Gland.

Prevalence
Enlarged Prostate usually occurs in men over the age of 50 - approximately 45% to 50% of men are affected by Enlarged Prostate at some stage of their lives.

The prevalence of Enlarged Prostate increases with age. 5% to 10% of men aged 30 experience Enlarged Prostate; more than 90% of men over the age of 85 experience Enlarged Prostate.

Substances that Alleviate Enlarged Prostate

Amino Acids
Alanine (but only when used in combination therapy with Glycine and Glutamic Acid - 780 mg of each Amino Acid for 14 days followed by 390 mg per day thereafter) minimizes the symptoms of Enlarged Prostate.

Glutamic Acid (but only when used in combination therapy with Alanine and Glycine - 780 mg of each Amino Acid for 14 days followed by 390 mg per day thereafter) minimizes the symptoms of Enlarged Prostate.

Glycine (but only when used in combination therapy with Alanine and Glutamic Acid - 780 mg of each Amino Acid for 14 days followed by 390 mg per day thereafter) minimizes the symptoms of Enlarged Prostate.

Hormones
Melatonin may shrink the Prostate in Enlarged Prostate patients:

- High-affinity Melatonin receptors exist in human benign prostate epithelial cells and Melatonin treatment for as few as 2 - 7 days can markedly inhibit the growth of non-viable Prostate Cells (i.e. the cells involved in Enlarged Prostate).

Lipids
Beta-Sitosterol (60 - 130 mg per day) alleviates Enlarged Prostate (the means by which Beta-Sitosterol reduces the risk of Enlarged Prostate is speculated to be via the inhibition of the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone by the 5-Alpha Reductase enzyme).

Minerals
Selenium helps to prevent Enlarged Prostate (it inhibits Cadmium-induced stimulation of the Epithelium of the Prostate).
Zinc alleviates Enlarged Prostate (by inhibiting the 5-Alpha Reductase enzyme that is responsible for the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone).

Organic Acids
D-Glucaric Acid helps to prevent Enlarged Prostate (by lowering elevated Estradiol levels).

Proteins
Urtica dioica Agglutinin (a constituent of Nettle) inhibits the ability of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) to bind to its Receptors in the Prostate and to subsequently stimulate the growth of Prostate tissue (a key underlying factor in the progression of Enlarged Prostate).

Polyphenols
Genistein helps to prevent Enlarged Prostate (by inhibiting the activity of Protein Kinase C, an enzyme that stimulates the proliferation of benign cells in the Prostate that leads to Enlarged Prostate).

Triterpenic Acids
Oleanolic Acid alleviates Enlarged Prostate.
Ursolic Acid alleviates Enlarged Prostate.

Foods/Herbs that Alleviate Enlarged Prostate

Bee Foods
Propolis alleviates the Inflammation associated with Enlarged Prostate (due to its Galangin content).

Herbs
Epilobium “shrinks” Enlarged Prostate:

- Epilobium contains two Polyphenols (Oenothein A and Oenothein B) which inhibit the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the 5-Alpha Reductase enzyme and this mechanism may underlie Epilobium’s ability to reverse Enlarged Prostate.

Goldenseal alleviates Enlarged Prostate (according to folklore).
Korean Ginseng may be useful for the treatment of Enlarged Prostate (it has been demonstrated to reduce the size of the Prostate in rats).

Nettle helps to prevent and treat Enlarged Prostate:

- Nettle inhibits the transformation of the benign Cells involved in Enlarged Prostate to the malignant Cells involved in Prostate Cancer.
- Nettle inhibits the binding of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to Prostate cells (thereby preventing DHT from stimulating the proliferation of Prostate cells that leads to Enlarged Prostate).
- The Urtica dioica Agglutinin content of Nettle inhibits the ability of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) to bind to its Receptors in the Prostate and to subsequently stimulate the growth of Prostate tissue (a key underlying factor in the progression of Enlarged Prostate).

- A constituent of Nettle ((10-E, 12-Z)-9-hydroxy-10, 12-octadecadienic acid) inhibits the Aromatase Enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of Testosterone to Estradiol (Aromatase activity is a key underlying factor in the progression of Enlarged Prostate).
- In one human study, a daily dosage of 240 mg of Nettle root combined with 320 mg of Saw Palmetto (for twelve weeks) caused a 26% increase in maximum urinary flow, a 29% increase in mean urinary flow, a 45% reduction in residual urine, a 50% reduction in Nocturia, a 62% reduction in Dysuria and a 53% decrease in post-void dribbling in Enlarged Prostate patients.

Pygeum significantly and reliably alleviates Enlarged Prostate (due to the Beta-Sitosterol, Beta-Sitosterone, Oleanolic Acid and Ursolic Acid content of Pygeum):

- Pygeum also reduces the Inflammation and swelling of the Prostate associated with Enlarged Prostate due to water accumulation in the Prostate.
- Pygeum reduces the activity of 5-Alpha Reductase (an endogenous Enzyme that is implicated in the development of Enlarged Prostate).
- Pygeum inhibits the activity of Aromatase enzymes that are implicated in the development of Enlarged Prostate.
- Pygeum inhibits Protein Kinase C-induced proliferation of Prostate cells.

- Pygeum improves the ability of Enlarged Prostate patients to achieve Erections and thereby improves the Sexual Performance of Enlarged Prostate patients.

Saw Palmetto (berries) alleviate Enlarged Prostate:

- Saw Palmetto inhibits the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the Prostate by up to 66% and blocks the attachment of Dihydrotestosterone to cellular binding sites, subsequently increasing the breakdown and excretion of Dihydrotestosterone.
- Saw Palmetto reduces the activity of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) in the Prostate (excessive Prostate EGF activity has been implicated in Enlarged Prostate).

- Saw Palmetto also acts directly on the Prostate in cases of Enlarged Prostate to reduce the Pain and Inflammation associated with Enlarged Prostate (due to Lipids in Saw Palmetto).

- Part of the beneficial effect of Saw Palmetto in the treatment of Enlarged Prostate relates to its ability to relax the Smooth Muscle at the Bladder outlet (thereby preventing the Urinary urgency and Frequent Urination that occurs in Enlarged Prostate patients).

- In most cases of Enlarged Prostate, treatment with Saw Palmetto causes some results to become apparent after six to eight weeks, although maximum improvement normally does not occur until six months of Saw Palmetto treatment.

Oils (Dietary Oils)
Flax Seed Oil alleviates Enlarged Prostate.

Pumpkin Seed Oil alleviates the symptoms of Enlarged Prostate.

Pollens
Cernilton (Rye Flower Pollen) alleviates Enlarged Prostate (including cases deemed to be severe and chronic).

Seeds
Pumpkin Seeds alleviate the symptoms of Enlarged Prostate.

Other Factors that Prevent Enlarged Prostate

Exercise
Regular Exercise helps to prevent Enlarged Prostate.

Substances that may Cause Enlarged Prostate

Enzymes
5-Alpha Reductase is implicated in Enlarged Prostate (due to its role as a catalyst for the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone - excessive serum Dihydrotestosterone is strongly implicated as a cause of Enlarged Prostate).

Excessive Aromatase activity has been implicated in Enlarged Prostate (Aromatase is known to be present in the Prostate where it catalyzes the conversion of Testosterone to Estradiol - Estradiol activity in the Prostate stimulates the growth of the Prostate).

Excessive activity of Protein Kinase C is implicated in the development of Enlarged Prostate (it stimulates the proliferation of the benign cells in the Prostate that are implicated in Prostate enlargement).

Growth Factors
Excessive activity of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) in the Prostate stimulates the development of Enlarged Prostate. research
Fibroblast Growth Factor is speculated to be involved in the development of Enlarged Prostate.

Hormones
Excessive serum Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) increases the risk of Enlarged Prostate.

Elevated Estrogens (Estradiol + Estrone) levels in the Prostate is an underlying cause of Enlarged Prostate.

- Elevated Estradiol levels increases the risk of Enlarged Prostate.

Excessive Prolactin production may cause Enlarged Prostate.

Minerals
Cadmium is strongly implicated as a cause of Enlarged Prostate (it stimulates the growth of the Epithelium of the Prostate).

Prostaglandins
Enlarged Prostate patients usually exhibit elevated levels of Prostaglandin E2 (resulting in severe inflammation of the Prostate).

Recreational Drugs
Tobacco smoking (more than 35 cigarettes per day) increases the risk of Enlarged Prostate.

These Ailments can Cause Enlarged Prostate

Immune System
Prostate Cancer (and also benign Prostate tumors) can be the underlying cause of some cases of Enlarged Prostate.

Contraindications: Enlarged Prostate Patients Should Avoid these Substances

Hormones
Men afflicted with Enlarged Prostate should not use supplemental Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) (due to the fact that DHEA is a precursor for endogenous Testosterone and Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) - substances that may promote Prostate cell proliferation).

Enlarged Prostate can Cause these Ailments

Excretory System

Enlarged Prostate increases the risk of infections of the Bladder.
Enlarged Prostate can cause Frequent Urination (polyuria) due to obstruction of the Urethra of the Bladder.
Enlarged Prostate can cause male urinary Incontinence (due to obstruction of the neck of the Bladder).
Enlarged Prostate can lead to impaired function of and damage to the Kidneys.

Enlarged Prostate can cause Male Urinary Hesitancy (“urinal stage fright”) - the delay in commencing urination that occurs from Enlarged Prostate is usually longer than the delay caused by Anxiety. Men with Enlarged Prostate often experience a delay of up to several minutes before they can commence urinating.
Enlarged Prostate can cause Painful Urination - (dysuria) due to obstruction of the neck of the Bladder.

Enlarged Prostate can cause Urine Retention in males due to obstruction of the neck of the Bladder.

Hair
Men afflicted with Prostate Enlargement have a higher risk for Male Pattern Baldness compared to men free of Prostate Enlargement.

Sexual System
Prostate Enlargement can interfere with the ability to attain/sustain erections and therefore can interfere with Sexual Performance.
